Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is one of four departments located within the Academic Achievement Center (AAC), the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University.

Position Summary
We are looking for equity-minded applicants who demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in our community.

The Accessibility Specialist is primarily responsible for the development and ongoing oversight of reasonable accommodations and other supportive resources related to students academic and co-curricular experiences at the University. Additionally, this position serves as a key agent in promoting equality, empowering advocates, and contributing to an accessible experience for all members of the Bridgewater State University community.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Director, Student Accessibility Services.
Supervision Exercised: May assist in the oversight and professional development of graduate assistants and student employees.

This position is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00pm, occasional evenings/weekend

This position is located on campus in Bridgewater, MA. This position is be eligible for hybrid / remote work in accordance with BSUremote work policy.

Essential Duties
In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to:
  1. Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, disability rights & advocacy throughout the Bridgewater State University community.
  2. Manage a caseload of students receiving support via the SAS Office, including facilitation of the interactive and ongoing process of establishing reasonable accommodations.
  3. Conduct individualized meetings with students upon request to support the holistic development of the student throughout their university experience.
  4. Interpret case histories, psycho-educational, neuro-psychological, and medical assessments to inform the establishment of reasonable academic and co-curricular accommodations.
  5. Effectively communicate with partnering departments and divisions to implement accommodations (eg. Residence Life & Housing, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, Operations & Facilities Management, Parking and Connect Card, University Events, BSUTransit, etc.,)
  6. Remain current on legal concepts pertaining to the assignment of reasonable accommodations and ensure incorporation of evolving standards into day-to-day decision making.
  7. Provide individual and group support services and training for students that may include development of self-regulation, leadership, and self-advocacy skills.
  8. Host learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and other internal and external stakeholders that explore legal requirements pertaining to adults with disabilities and strategies for transition to college and implementation of accommodations and equitable design.
  9. Work collaboratively with stakeholders that include students, faculty, staff, parents/advocates, and local/state/federal authorities to promote successful practices that ensure protection of the civil of rights of students with disabilities.
  10. Represent Student Accessibility Services at on campus and community-based events and activities that may include admissions events, prospective students activities, cross-campus collaborative programming, SEPAC presentations, etc.,
  11. Support accommodated testing opportunities for students as needed. This may include utilization of various assistive and adaptive technology.
  12. Contribute to the creation of innovative and practical solutions to address current and emerging student needs.
  13. Maintain student records, including digital case notes, through use of SAS’s case management software and other university data programs.
  14. Actively contribute to the development and implementation of processes and resources necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
  15. Liaise with various campus offices to promote accessibility-related outreach and support to intersectional students.
  16. Contribute to the marketing and online presence of the office via multiple platforms (print, social media, BSU-specific applications, etc.,).
  17. Participate in and/or lead University based working groups, committees, events, or other activities as assigned/interested.
  18. Collect and summarize data for the purpose of informed decision-making and creation of resources to meet identified needs.
  19. Perform other professional tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field plus a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated skills related to empowering students with disabilities, including but not limited to those pertaining to medical, psychological, learning, and cognitive diagnoses.
  • Familiarity with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 as they apply to postsecondary education.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in individual and group settings.
  • Strong computer skills; ability to work with Microsoft Office products and student information systems.
  • Familiarity with case histories, psycho-educational, neuro-psychological, and medical assessments.
  • High degree of personal and professional integrity, respect for privacy and confidentiality, and a sense of ethics.
  • Experience with and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities, including specific experience with one or more of the following identities/communities: People with both visible and invisible disabilities, people of color, minoritized groups and immigrant populations, people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions, first-generation students, people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field plus a minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Related professional experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with de-escalation strategies and mental health first aid.
  • Experience in analyzing case histories and interpreting psycho-educational, neuro-psychological and medical assessments.
  • Experience with Banner, Qualtrics, Clockwork, Navigate
  • Experience with related Assistive Technologies
